Data compilations expand the scope of research; however, data citation practice lags behind advances in data use. It remains uncommon for data users to credit data producers in professionally meaningful ways. In paleontology, databases like the Paleobiology Database (PBDB) enable assessment of patterns and processes spanning millions of years, up to global scale. The status quo for data citation creates an imbalance wherein publications drawing data from the PBDB receive significantly more citations (median: 4.3 ± 3.5 citations/year) than the publications producing the data (1.4 ± 1.3 citations/year). By accounting for data reuse where citations were neglected, the projected citation rate for data-provisioning publications approached parity (4.2 ± 2.2 citations/year) and the impact factor of paleontological journals (n = 55) increased by an average of 13.4% (maximum increase = 57.8%) in 2019. Without rebalancing the distribution of scientific credit, emerging “big data” research in paleontology—and science in general—is at risk of undercutting itself through a systematic devaluation of the work that is foundational to the discipline.

Introduction
Social isolation in childhood can be detrimental to physical and mental health. Children with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), may be particularly at risk for becoming socially isolated. Similarly, isolated children have limited opportunities to observe, model, and learn age-appropriate interpersonal interactions with other children which could increase ADHD behaviours.
ObjectivesThis study examined longitudinal associations between ADHD symptoms and social isolation across childhood. We tested the direction of this association across time, while accounting for pre-existing characteristics, and assessed whether this association varied by ADHD presentation, informant, sex, and socioeconomic status.
MethodsParticipants included 2,232 children from the Environmental Risk (E-Risk) Longitudinal Twin Study. ADHD symptoms and social isolation were measured at ages 5, 7, 10, and 12. We used random-intercept cross-lagged panel models to assess the directionality of the association across childhood.
ResultsChildren with increased ADHD symptoms were consistently at increased risk of becoming socially isolated later in childhood, over and above stable characteristics (β=0.05-0.08). These longitudinal associations were not bidirectional; isolated children were not at risk of worsening ADHD symptoms later on. Children with a hyperactive ADHD presentation were more likely to become isolated, compared to an inattentive presentation. This was evident in the school setting, as observed by teachers, but not by mothers at home.
ConclusionsOur findings highlight the importance of enhancing peer social support and inclusion for children with ADHD, particularly in school settings. We add explanatory value over and above traditional longitudinal methods as our results represent how individual children change over time, relative to their own pre-existing characteristics.

Regional to global high-resolution correlation and timing is critical when attempting to answer important geological questions, such as the greenhouse to icehouse transition that occurred during the Eocene–Oligocene boundary transition. Timing of these events on a global scale can only be answered using correlation among many sections, and multiple correlation proxies, including biostratigraphy, lithostratigraphy, geochemistry and geophysical methods. Here we present litho- and biostratigraphy for five successions located in the southeastern USA. To broaden the scope of correlation, we also employ carbon and oxygen stable isotope and magnetic susceptibility (χ) data to interpret these sections regionally, and correlate to the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) near Massignano in central Italy. Our results indicate that approaching the Eocene–Oligocene boundary, climate warmed slightly, but then δ18O data exhibit an abrupt c. +5 ‰ positive shift towards cooling that reached a maximum c. 1 m below the boundary at St Stephens Quarry, Alabama. This shift was accompanied by a c. −3 ‰ negative shift in δ13C interpreted to indicate environmental changes associated with the onset of the Eocene–Oligocene boundary planktonic foraminiferal extinction event. The observed cold pulse may be responsible for the final extinction of Hantkeninidae, used to define the beginning of the Rupelian Stage. Immediately preceding the boundary, Hantkeninidae species dropped significantly in abundance and size (pre-extinction dwarfing occurring before the final Eocene–Oligocene extinctions), and these changes may be the reason for inconsistencies in past Eocene–Oligocene boundary placement in the southeastern USA.

Gastrointestinal nematodes represent important sources of economic losses in farmed ruminants, and the increasing frequency of anthelmintic resistance requires an increased ability to explore alternative strategies. Theoretical approaches at the crossroads of immunology and epidemiology are valuable tools in that context. In the case of Teladorsagia circumcincta in sheep, the immunological mechanisms important for resistance are increasingly well-characterized. However, despite the existence of a wide range of theoretical models, there is no framework integrating the characteristic features of this immune response into a tractable phenomenological model. Here, we propose to bridge that gap by developing a flexible modelling framework that allows for variability in nematode larval intake which can be used to track the variations in worm burdens. We parameterize this model using data from trickle infection of sheep and show that using simple immunological assumptions, our model can capture the dynamics of both adult worm burdens and nematode fecal egg counts. In addition, our analysis reveals interesting dose-dependent effects on the immune response. Finally, we discuss potential developments of this model and highlight how an improved cross-talk between empiricists and theoreticians would facilitate important advances in the study of infectious diseases.

Summary
Introduction
Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecologic malignancy in the United States. In 2010, over 21 880 new cases were diagnosed and 13 850 women died from this disease (1). Over the past two decades, advances in conventional therapy have led to an increase in five-year survival for women with ovarian cancer, but the fraction of long-term survivors remains unchanged at 30%, when all stages are considered. Traditional methods are unlikely to produce dramatic improvements in outcomes. Insights into the molecular mechanisms of ovarian cancers, the biological basis for their clinical behavior, and utilization of these targets are needed.
Cellular origin of ovarian cancers
Over 90% of ovarian cancers are of epithelial origin with mesothelial features. The remaining 10% are from germ cells or granulosa-theca cells within the ovary. Traditionally, epithelial ovarian cancers have been thought to originate from flattened cells covering the ovary or lining subserosal inclusion cysts (2). Recent evidence suggests that the majority of familial ovarian cancers, and as many as 20% of the primary peritoneal cancers, may arise from the fimbriae of the Fallopian tube (3). Epithelial ovarian cancers exhibit four histotypes (serous, endometrioid, mucinous, and clear cell) regulated by the different HOX genes implicated in normal gynecologic development (Table 54.1; 4,5). Ovarian cancers may be of low or high grade, correlating with stage at presentation, rate of growth, and response to chemotherapy. Ninety percent of epithelial ovarian cancers are clonal; thus, the genetic abnormalities found in primary cancers are also found in metastases, although the correlation is not always precise (6).

Binocular rivalry (BR) is an intriguing phenomenon that occurs when two different images are presented, one to each eye, resulting in alternation or rivalry between the percepts. The phenomenon has been studied for nearly 200 years, with renewed and intensive investigation over recent decades. The rate of perceptual switching has long been known to vary widely between individuals but to be relatively stable within individuals. A recent twin study demonstrated that individual variation in BR rate is under substantial genetic control, a finding that also represented the first report, using a large study, of genetic contribution for any post-retinal visual processing phenomenon. The twin study had been prompted by earlier work showing BR rate was slow in the heritable psychiatric condition, bipolar disorder (BD). Together, these studies suggested that slow BR may represent an endophenotype for BD, and heralded the advent of modern clinical and genetic studies of rivalry. This new focus has coincided with rapid advances in 3D display technology, but despite such progress, specific development of technology for rivalry research has been lacking. This review therefore compares different display methods for BR research across several factors, including viewing parameters, image quality, equipment cost, compatibility with other investigative methods, subject group, and sample size, with a focus on requirements specific to large-scale clinical and genetic studies. It is intended to be a resource for investigators new to BR research, such as clinicians and geneticists, and to stimulate the development of 3D display technology for advancing interdisciplinary studies of rivalry.

Individual animals are often infected not only by different parasite species, but also by multiple genotypes of the same parasite species. Genetic relatedness among parasites sharing a host is expected to modulate their strategies of resource exploitation, growth and virulence. We experimentally examined the effects that genetic diversity and infection intensity had on host mortality, infectivity and growth of the marine trematode Maritrema novaezealandensis in amphipod hosts. The presence of 2 versus 1 parasite genotype during infection did not influence subsequent host mortality, had different effects on infectivity among genotypes and did not influence growth or variation in parasite growth. Density-dependent growth reductions revealed that the number of parasites infecting a host was more important than their genetic relatedness. Temperature, host size, and host sex influenced the degree to which density-dependent factors affected parasite growth. Our results suggest that the effects of parasite relatedness vary among parasite genotypes in this trematode species, and reveal that many factors play an important role during parasite development and transmission.

XANES (X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy) has been employed to evaluate the efficacy of a process designed to encapsulate and reduce TcO4- in cement matrices, thereby immobilizing Tc. The oxidation state of Se following bioremediation of Se by bacteria has also been determined by XANES. The XANES measurements were performed at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL) and the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at the respective K edges of Tc (21.0 keV) and Se (12.7 keV). Comparison of the XANES spectra of Tc in untreated cement to Tc in slag treated cement and to the chemical shifts of reference materials, shows that the oxidation state of Tc is the same in both cements. Thus, the addition of a reducing agent to the cement formulation does not significantly reduce the TcO4-. The common soil bacterium, Bacillus subtilis, is known to incorporate Se on or within the cell wall when exposed to a Se(IV) solution. The Se XANES spectra of B. subtilis, as well as bacillus isolated from selenium rich soil, show that the organisms reduce selenite to the red allotrope of elemental Se.

Surface tensions of viscous molten polymers were measured with the modified Wilhelmy method. Small diameter fibers were used as vertical surface tension probes giving rise to rapid equilibration of the wetting meniscus. Noise due to thermal convection currents was suppressed by the use of a baffle tube to protect the electro-balance which allowed us to extend our studies to temperatures exceeding 400°C. The precision of the surface tension measurement at T<350°C for n≤10,000 Poise is better than 0.5%. Discussion is made of the rate of meniscus equilibration as a function fiber diameter. The surface tensions of polystyrene(PS), polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS), poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG), poly(propylene glycol)(PPG), and polyethylene(PE) were determined as a function of MW and temperature in order to compare with theoretical predictions. The Cahn-Hilliard interfacial gradient theory is used in conjunction with equation of state models using pressure-volume-temperature data as the input. Good agreement with experiment is found using one adjustable parameter which is independent of MW, for both polar and non-polar polymers.
